Mason StainsĀ® (by Mason Color Works)
Mason stainsĀ® can be used in a wide variety of ways. They can be used to color clay
bodies, slips, or glazes. They can be mixed with water or with frits and brushed onto pottery
forms, either over or under a glaze.
Mason stainsĀ® react differently under different circumstances. Some of the variables that can
alter your results include the chemical composition of the clay body and glaze that you use,
the firing temperatures, the kiln atmosphere and the concentration of stain that you use. You
will need to experiment a bit with your particular applications.
Note that a few of the stains (chrome-tin pinks), when used with a glaze, require the glaze to
be zincless and also to have a whiting concentration of 12% -15%. Those particular stains are
noted in the catalog and most of the stains that we offer do not have this
requirement.
Products that are marked as body stains are specifically recommended as such by the Mason
Chemical Company. Other stains may also work for this purpose. When using porcelain slip, try
using two level tablespoons of stain in each quart of slip. In porcelain clay, put one level
teaspoon of stain in with each 100 grams of wet clay. In each case add a very small of water
to the stain in order to produce a slurry before mixing it with the clay/slip. This allows for
a more thorough and even mix. The proportion of stain can be increased or decreased in order
to alter the intensity of the color. Available in 1/4 lb., 1 lb. or 5 lb.
